Open-Water Confidence

For pool swimmers who want to feel calmer at the beach, learn open water skills or prepare for an event outside the lane ropes.

Swimmer practising open-water skills at the beach

November to April · Private 1:1 beach coaching · Subject to suitable conditions

Private 1:1 · $165 per 60 minutes · Custom follow-up included.

What we’ll work on together.

We’ll start on shore, talk about your experience and check the conditions. The lesson may be shortened, changed or postponed if the water or weather is unsuitable.

Is this lesson for you?

Pool swimmers moving outdoors

You are comfortable in a lane but want a supported introduction to swimming without walls, lane ropes or a visible black line.

Adults who feel disoriented

Dark water, limited visibility, depth or difficulty holding a direction may create tension even when your pool stroke is capable.

Swimmers learning variable conditions

You want practical ways to breathe, orient and make decisions when wind, chop, current or temperature change the experience.

People preparing for an event

You have an ocean swim or triathlon ahead and want to connect pool fitness with the specific skills the environment requires.

Skills we can work on

Your lesson will focus on the skills most useful to you, with time to practise and ask questions.

  • Safe entry, orientation and composure

Read the entry, acclimatise gradually, establish a breathing rhythm and know how to pause or return if the situation feels wrong.

  • Sighting and a straighter course

Choose useful landmarks and integrate brief forward vision with minimal interruption to body position and breathing.

  • Breathing in chop and variable conditions

Adjust timing, side choice and stroke rhythm when waves or wind make a preferred breathing pattern unreliable.

  • Pacing, navigation and decisions

Balance direction with effort, reassess position regularly and make early choices instead of waiting until a problem grows.

  • Starts and wetsuit skills

When relevant, practise entry timing, crowded starts, buoy turns and movement changes created by wetsuit buoyancy.

What you’re working towards

01

More confidence entering open water

Use a deliberate routine to assess, enter, acclimatise and begin swimming without rushing the first few minutes.

02

Stronger orientation and navigation

Hold a more reliable course, select effective landmarks and recognise when correction is needed.

03

A calmer response to conditions

Adjust breathing, pace or direction while preserving the ability to stop and make a clear safety decision.

04

A plan for safe independent practice

Know the conditions, support, equipment and boundaries required before attempting the next session.

Your first lesson

The lesson starts on shore. Discuss your pool background and previous beach swims, then check the location and conditions with your coach. The first water task stays close and conservative enough for both of you to see how you respond.

  1. 1

    Assess swimmer and conditions

Review your experience, the location, weather, water movement, temperature, entry and the safest boundaries for the session.

  2. 2

    Acclimatise and orient

Enter gradually, settle breathing and establish a reliable reference point before adding distance or complexity.

  3. 3

    Practise one environmental skill

Work on sighting, breathing, navigation or event preparation, then finish with a clear plan for safe follow-up practice.
