What we’ll work on together.

There’s no pressure to push through hesitation. You agree on a comfortable starting point, try a small skill and stop to talk whenever you need to. Understanding what the water is doing often removes more fear than another rushed lap.

Is this lesson for you?

Adults new to structured swimming

You may have had little formal instruction, learnt informally as a child or simply never developed a reliable way to move and breathe in the water.

Swimmers who feel anxious or uncomfortable

This includes fear of putting your face in, losing your footing, floating, moving into deeper water or being unable to recover calmly.

People returning after years away

If swimming once felt familiar but now feels uncertain, the program rebuilds comfort and coordination without assuming the old skills will immediately return.

Adults wanting stronger water safety

You want practical self-trust for pools, holidays or family activities: not just a technically recognisable stroke.

Skills we can work on

Your lesson will focus on the skills most useful to you, with time to practise and ask questions.

  • Comfort, breathing and calm submersion

Learn to exhale into the water, control the timing of your breath and return to standing without urgency.

  • Floating, balance and body awareness

Explore how head position, buoyancy and small changes in posture help the water support you.

  • Freestyle foundations and rhythm

Build a simple relationship between body position, arm action, kicking and breathing before adding distance.

  • Treading water and recovery positions

Practise useful ways to pause, orient yourself, regain your feet and conserve energy when forward swimming stops.

  • Confidence in deeper water

When appropriate, transfer familiar skills away from the wall through gradual, agreed steps with your coach close by.

What you’re working towards

01

Feel calmer and more in control

Know how to pause, breathe and reset instead of reacting with tension when something feels unfamiliar.

02

Understand how the water supports you

Use balance and body position deliberately rather than relying on fast, exhausting movements to stay afloat.

03

Swim short distances with confidence

Link breathing and movement for a distance that is meaningful to you, then build from a repeatable starting point.

04

Know exactly what to practise next

Leave with one or two safe, relevant priorities instead of a long list of disconnected drills.

Your first lesson

Expect plenty of conversation and no surprises. Talk through your history and what would count as a good result for you. The water work begins somewhere secure and finishes with one or two things you feel comfortable repeating.

  1. 1

    Talk through your experience

Share what feels comfortable, what creates uncertainty and what you would most like swimming to make possible.

  2. 2

    Establish a safe starting point

Breathing, balance and movement are observed at a depth where you can stay relaxed and communicate.

  3. 3

    Practise one useful change

You rehearse a manageable skill, understand how it should feel and agree on the most sensible next step.
